The Story behind my Matchbook Prints
Prior to moving back to Greenville in 2018, I was a food and hospitality brand designer in New York City. I would design brand identities for restaurants, hotels, bars, but I also helped maintain designs for some independent restaurants like Jack's Wife Freda, Bubby's and Beatnic (prior byChloe.) Whenever we pitched new identities, we almost always included a design of matchbooks or matchboxes as a fun way to elevate their brand. Then I started noticing a lot of my favorite boutiques (e.g. Sleepy Jones, Sezanne), restaurants, and even bookstores carrying matchbooks, and I started collecting them.
However, moving back to Greenville, I did not find a single restaurant, bar, or store that carries matchbooks as a brand asset. So I decided to illustrate my own Greenville matchbooks, using vintage matchbooks as my inspiration.
I started with the Greenville Matchbook Print. I illustrated your tourist landmarks, but my favorite was adding in my favorite local spots like Lake Jocassee and the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Since then, I've added Asheville and Atlanta, as those are the cities I often frequent and love.
